The Most Common Types of Cancer

The common types of cancer all begin in the same manner. Cancer is a product of cell growth, division and multiplication into growths and tumors that are generally cancerous in nature. Cancer can affect any part of the body. It is therefore important that one should be aware of its likely symptoms since some forms of cancer are treatable when diagnosed early enough. Here are some common cancer symptoms or early signals:

  • Persistent cough that lasts a long time before healing
  • Excessive bleeding of wounds or cuts
  • Changes in bowel movements
  • Weight loss
  • Occurrence of a growth or lump

Based on the above symptoms, one can easily suspect the occurrence of a tumor or growth. Types of cancer diagnosed in many people may include:

  • Melanoma (Skin cancer): This is a common type of skin cancer. Although it can affect any part of the skin, it is seen primarily on those parts of the skin exposed to too much sunlight. It is in the outer part of the skin, also known as the epidermis where cancer begins to develop. The epidermis contains the melanocytes, basal and squamous cells. Skin cancer easily spreads to the other parts of the body if not treated in its early stages.
  • Prostate Cancer: It is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in men in the U.S. This type of cancer does not show any signs or symptoms of growth in its early stages. Older men above 65 years are the most affected with this type of cancer.
  • Lung Cancer: This is also one of the most common cancers. It exists in two forms; small cell lung cancer and non-small cell lung cancer. The latter is the more common lung cancer type, and is preventable by avoiding all the tobacco products and quitting smoking.
  • Breast Cancer: Breast cancer mostly infects women but is also found in men. This type of cancer begins to develop within the lobules, ducts and other tissues found within the breasts. Most women are diagnosed with ductal carcinoma, which is the most common type of breast cancer.

Given that cancer can be treatable when detected early, always seek medical attention whenever you show any signs or symptoms.
